KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – There is a towing controversy in Kalamazoo County.

Who is going to tow cars for the county and how much of your tax money will go to pay for it? These questions could all be decided Tuesday night.

Right now McDonald's holds the towing contract with Kalamazoo County, but a low bid by Graham's could change that at Tuesday night's commissioners meeting.

Not everyone is happy about that.

When the contract came up for bid McDonald's submitted a bid in the $30 per car range.

But Graham's under bid them and submitted a proposal to charge the county just a penny per car, stating they would make up the money on the back end by charging their customers more.

Now one county commissioner is speaking out against the low bid saying it's not fair.

"They were going to make it back on the backside after they received the car and they were going to charge more to take the car if they had to tow it to the salvage yard or if they have to bring it to a body repair shop and to me that may not be illegal, but to me its unethical," said Kalamazoo County Commissioner John Nieuwenhuis.

We received a statement from James Graham with Graham's towing. He tells us McDonald's frequently over-charges its customers saying quote - "The intent of my bid was to draw their attention to a system that is severely flawed allowing McDonald's Towing to charge fees above what the contract allows."

Voting on the towing contract was tabled back in April but it's up again at Tuesday night's meeting.

The meeting starts at 7:00 at the Kalamazoo County Administration Building.
