The Township Council on Monday will discuss an ordinance that would create Bridgewater's own municipal impound lot and the municipal budget. The 8 p.m. meeting will be at the Municipal Complex, 100 Commons Way.

Township officials have said the impound lot is expected to generate $200,000 in revenue for the municipality -- needed money, after losing $1.9 million in state aid from the township's $36 million budget.

Under the new impound lot proposal, drivers would have to pay the township to get their vehicles out of impound. Currently, vehicles are taken to area tow companies' impound lots.

Frank Sanchez, a Somerset Hills Towing spokesman, questioned the township's math, and worries the impound lot will cost the municipality money to operate it, as well as towing companies' business.

Somerset Hills Towing is one of several towing companies contracted by the township. The company uses its own impound lot on Union Avenue.

“The approval of this amendment is detrimental not only to the local towing companies, but detrimental to the surrounding businesses, and community they help support, and is detrimental to the taxpayers and residents of Bridgewater,” Sanchez said in an e-mail.

Township Administrator Jim Naples was unavailable for comment Friday.

The impound lot is one of several measures to make up for the loss of state aid, Naples has said.

The township laid off 15 employees May 1. All other employees have agreed to a wage freeze this year, Naples has said.

The township also is offering one more liquor-distribution license - something that is expected to net at least $250,000 for the township, Naples has said.
